Board of Education Holds First Meeting of 2017
The Hart County Board of Education welcomed two new board members during the first meeting of the year on Monday, January 9th. Mrs. Kim Pierce officially joined the board as the District 3 representative, and Mr. Dennis Dowell began his term as the District 5 representative.
According to board policy, a chairperson and vice chairperson shall be elected at the first meeting to serve for the calendar year. The chairperson shall preside over all meetings, sign official documents, and perform other duties as required by state and local law. The vice chairperson shall preside in the absence of the chairperson.
Mr. Matthew Honiotes, District 2 representative, was elected to serve as chairperson, and Mrs. Stephanie Burton, District 1 representative, was elected as vice chairperson. Mr. Honiotes began his term on the board of education January 2015 and has served as vice chairperson during the last year. Mrs. Burton began her tenure as a board member January 2013. She served as the vice chairperson for 2014 and as chairperson for 2015.
The board also elected to keep the second Monday of each month as the date of regular meetings and 6 p.m. as the time of regular meetings. All meetings will be held at the Hart County Board of Education office. Harben, Hartley, and Hawkins, LLP was approved as legal counsel for the Hart County Charter System.
The purpose of Board of Education meetings are to consider and conduct the business of the school system. All meetings are open to the public, and an opportunity for public comment is provided on each meeting agenda. Meeting agendas and approved minutes from past meetings can be found on the Hart County Charter System website, www.hart.k12.ga.us.
