Students to Serve on State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council
Two students from the Hart County Charter System have been chosen by State School Superintendent Richard Woods to serve on the 2016-2017 Student Advisory Council. Carson Fowler, seventh grade student at Hart County Middle School, and Ryan Bryant, a senior at Hart County High School.
“I want to improve education for students all around Georgia,” Carson Fowler said . “On the Student Advisory Council, I will be discussing how state policies affect students in Georgia with the superintendent and education issues, and I will also be doing community service projects to benefit kids in Georgia.”
Over 800 Georgia students applied to serve on the council. 108 were selected based off the strength of their essay answers. The focus of the council application was student ideas for public education and ways they feel their educational experience could be improved.
“The reason that I want to be involved in the Student Advisory Council is that I’ve heard many people say that kids can’t be involved and make a difference, but anybody can make a difference if they really put their mind to it and they have the drive to do so,” said Ryan Bryant. “I applied for this because I thought it would give me the chance to make a difference either in the community or in the state.”
As Student Advisory Council members, the students will meet with Superintendent Woods and other middle and high school students throughout the year to discuss their ideas and serve as ambassadors for the superintendent. Middle school representatives will meet September 12, November 7, February 13, and April 10. High school representatives will meet September 13, November 8, February 14, and April 11. All meetings will take place at the Georgia Department of Education office in Atlanta.
