SkillsUSA Students Earn State Championships, Medals at State Conference
The 2023 SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference ended with Hart County bringing home two State Championships and eight medals in total.
Students from across the state attended the SkillsUSA Georgia State Championships on March 9-11 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. The Hart College and Career Academy SkillsUSA team entered into 19 contests total, and returned home with 8 medals, including two first-place finishes.
Hart County High School senior Richard Terrell and junior Helen Cook captured a state championship in Cyber Security with a first-place finish. Terriuana Chapman, a sophomore, brought home a state championship in Restaurant Service with her first-place finish.
Earning runners-up spots, junior Andrew Pattillo and senior Wallace Pham placed second in Additive Manufacturing. Alexis Del Rio-Magana, a senior, captured second place in the Technical Drafting Test.
Luke Johnson, a sophomore, earned a third-place finish in HVAC, as well as a $2,000 scholarship. Olivia Whitmire, a senior, took third place in Nurse Assisting. Jacob Bern, a sophomore, also earned third place in the Basic Drafting Test. In the Architecture Drawing Test, Wallace Pham earned third place for Hart County.
“Our SkillsUSA students have been working diligently to prepare for the state conference, and that preparation paid off,” Hart College and Career Academy CEO Steve Burton said. “I’m very proud of all of our students who competed, and I’m thankful for all of the instructors who have invested their time and effort into these students to see them succeed. SkillsUSA competitions are a great way to give students real-life experience in the fields they have been studying in the Hart College and Career Academy.”
The Hart College and Career Academy SkillsUSA team will now look ahead to the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference on June 19-23 in Atlanta.
