Breakfast in the Classroom
Students at all Hart County Elementary Schools are learning that eating a healthy breakfast is the first step in doing well in school. Food is the "fuel" their bodies need in order to "operate." The Hart County School Nutrition Program has received grants from the Southeastern United Dairy Industry Association to implement the Breakfast in the Classroom program. Instead of students eating breakfast in the cafeteria, nutrition staff deliver breakfast to the classrooms. Not only does this help encourage students to eat breakfast, but also helps to increase instructional time and decrease behavioral problems.
One of the goals of the Hart County School Nutrition Program is to incorporate more fruits and vegetables in student meals. In the Breakfast in the Classroom program, students are served fresh fruit instead of fruit juice. This helps decrease the amount of sugar students receive which in turn helps prevent childhood diabetes and obesity. Whole grain products and milk are also served.
Breakfast for students in $1.25 and the reduced price is $0.40. Parents may pay daily, weekly, or monthly. Please make sure to send money not only for breakfast but also lunch. If parents choose to feed their children breakfast at home and do want want breakfast served to them at school, they should contact the school nutrition manager at the school.
