Hart County Schools - Special Services Department Presents
HELP 411 - "Helping Educate Loving Parents"

This school year the Special Services Department of Hart County Schools has scheduled a series of help sessions for parents of a child with a disability.

Topics include parent resources, how to recognize behavior problems and methods to deal with them, how to apply for Medicaid and Medicaid waivers, how to use a computer to look for help or check a child’s grades and legal milestones for students and what they mean to parents.

All Citizens of Hart County and surrounding counties are invited to attend.

To encourage attendance we are providing:

  • *Free Hot Dog Meal
  • * Free Babysitting
  • *Drawing for $25 gas each meeting

Sept. 20 – “Resources for Parents”   Hart Co. Middle School, 176 Powell St., Hartwell 5:30-7:30 pm
What is “Parent to Parent”, what do they provide, how to get one-on-one help, how to find and use web sites for help. Presented by Parent 2 Parent of Georgia and Hart County Schools Special Services Department.  

Oct. 11 – “Transition Planning for the Child with Special Needs”  Hart Co. Middle School, 176 Powell St., Hartwell 5:30-7:30 pm
What it is, why it is needed, testing given and how it is used, career choices, role of vocational rehabilitation, resources available to the parent and how employment effects Social Security Benefits. Presented by Parent to Parent of Georgia, Joya Lenoir - Department of Labor, Hart County Transition Specialist and the Special Services Department.

Nov. 03 – “Recognizing Behavior Problems & How to Deal with Them” Hart Co. Middle School, 176 Powell St., Hartwell 5:30-7:30 pm
This is the first in a series of 2 classes. All members of the community are invited to attend (parents, teachers, administrators).Presented by personnel from Georgia State University, Center for Leadership in Disability and Hart County Schools Special Services Department.

Dec. 06 - “Recognizing Behavior Problems & How to Deal with Them”  Hart Co. Middle School, 176 Powell St., Hartwell 5:30-7:30 pm
This is the second in a series of 2 classes. All members of the community are invited to attend (parents, teachers, administrators).Presented by personnel from Georgia State University, Center for Leadership in Disability and Hart County Schools Special Services Department.

Jan. 10 – “Legal Milestones, Consequences and Legal Guardianship”  Hart Co. Middle School, 176 Powell St., Hartwell 5:30-7:30 pm
At what age students are responsible for their actions as an adult, the ramifications for the student and the parent, and what guardianship means to a parent. Presented by Hart Co. Sheriff, Mike Cleveland, Hart Co. Juvenile Justice Program Manager Crystal Teasley and Hart County Schools Special Services Department.

Feb. 07 – “Georgia Medicaid Basics – How to Apply for Services” Hart Co. Middle School, 176 Powell St., Hartwell 5:30-7:30 pm
Information about Medicaid services, waivers, and how to be an effective advocate for your child in the healthcare system. Presented by Parent 2 Parent of Georgia and Hart County Schools Special Services Department.
March  - “Hart County School Tours and Pizza for Children with Special Needs” Presented by Hart County Schools Special Services Department and Hart County Transition Specialist.

March 06 – Hartwell Elementary School - Students moving from the SKIP program to Elementary School Time: noon – 1:00 pm

March 08 – South Hart Elementary School  - Students moving from the SKIP program to Elementary School Time: 6 – 7:00 pm

March 13 – North Hart Elementary School - Students moving from the SKIP program to Elementary School Time: 6 – 7:00 pm

March 15Hart County Middle School - Students moving from Elementary School to Middle School Time: 6 – 7:00 pm

March 27Hart County High School - Students moving from Middle School to High School Time: noon – 1:00 pm

April 10 – “NOW/Comp Waivers and Medicaid” Hart Co. Middle School, 176 Powell St., Hartwell 5:30-7:30 pm

What are these waivers, who can apply, how to apply, when to apply. Individual help sessions provided. Presented by Dottie Adams, Director, Individual and Family Support, Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities and Hart County Schools Special Services Department.
